Tirta Gangga Water Palace
Tirta Gangga Water Palace, located in the eastern part of Bali near Mount Agung, is a stunning former royal palace renowned for its exquisite water gardens. Built in 1946 by the late King of Karangasem, Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem, it served as a royal retreat and a place of worship. The name “Tirta Gangga” translates to “holy water of the Ganges,” reflecting the Balinese Hindu belief in the sacredness of water and its connection to the holy river in India.
The complex spans about 1.2 hectares and features a series of beautifully designed ponds, fountains, stone carvings, and lush gardens. Key features include:
- Ornamental Ponds: These ponds are adorned with stepping stones that allow visitors to walk above the water and get close to the many colorful koi fish swimming below, creating popular photo opportunities.
- Nawa Sanga Fountain: A striking fountain with eleven tiers, representing the nine directions of the Balinese cosmos, adds a majestic element to the gardens.
- Swimming Pools: Fed by natural springs, there are public swimming pools with cool, clear water where visitors can take a refreshing dip.
- Statues and Carvings: Throughout the complex, you’ll find intricate stone statues of deities and mythical creatures, adding to the artistic and spiritual ambiance.
- Water Temple (Patirthan): A sacred space within the palace grounds where the Balinese come for spiritual purification and to collect holy water for ceremonies.
Tirta Gangga was significantly damaged by the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 but was lovingly restored. Today, it stands as a testament to Balinese artistry and a serene oasis for visitors seeking tranquility and beauty.
